According to the study team led by Thomas Davenport, there is still a lot to do. They concluded, “Most executives do not believe that their businesses are driven by insight.”

At least 76% of respondents say that their “analytical maturity” has risen over the last year, but less than four out of ten (37%) believe that their companies are relatively mature in data analysis. The remaining 63% “lacked technological infrastructure, still working in silos or expanding ad-hoc capabilities,” reports the Deloitte team.

In addition, 67% of surveyed executives did not feel like accessing or using data from existing tools and resources. Most still use traditional tools like spreadsheets and more traditional desktop business intelligence programs (58% combined).

Currently, 46% of executives say they believe that they rely more on artificial intelligence to communicate business insight, according to the findings of this study. But companies need to open up their data resources, even more, to make this possible. Most (64%) reports are based on structured data from internal systems/resources. Far fewer (18%) used unstructured data (such as product images or customer audio files) or social media comments.

“It can be difficult to include this type of data in the traditional relational data storage property row and column format,” said Davenport and co-authors. “These types of data are often harder to interpret, but can provide a more complete and holistic understanding of the big picture – especially the outside world.”

There are advances in technology as solutions and systems quickly catch up to create unstructured enterprise value data. “These include Hadoop and other open-source projects, cloud-based architectures, data stream management approaches, and new storage device environments.”

Businesses that go beyond their business goals are linked to this unconfirmed value: executives who identify unstructured data as one of the most valuable sources of insight have outperformed their business goals by 24%, according to the study. ,

There are several advanced tools in your business: 67% also use at least one advanced tool like SAS, an open-source tool like R, a programming language like Python, or an AI tool.
